For the best experience, it is generally recommended to complete the Everest Three Passes trek in a counter-clockwise direction. While it is possible to go clockwise, it is not advised due to the steep altitude gain when crossing the Renjo La pass first. Additionally, from Gokyo, you have the option to add an extra day to explore the remote Gokyo Lakes further up the glacial valley. Regardless of the direction you choose, all three high passes involve gaining altitude.
Obtaining travel insurance is mandatory and highly recommended before embarking on any adventurous trips in Nepal. We advise all our clients to secure travel insurance that covers emergency helicopter evacuation, which may be necessary in case of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) or any other emergencies at high altitudes where alternative means of transportation are limited. It is essential to carefully review the insurance policy and its coverage before making a final decision. Remember to carry proof of your insurance with you during your trip and keep a copy in a secure place. Make sure your insurance provides adequate protection and covers the activities involved in your trek.
The Everest 3 high passes trek is best undertaken during specific seasons for optimal safety and enjoyment. The recommended time frame for this challenging expedition is from mid-March to May (spring) and from September to November (autumn). In spring, the weather gradually warms up, and the landscapes come alive with blooming rhododendron flowers and lush greenery. The clear skies provide stunning panoramic views, and the moderate temperatures make trekking comfortable. The trails are less crowded, allowing for a serene experience. Autumn offers clear skies and stable weather after the monsoon season, with vibrant autumn colors and excellent visibility. The pleasant temperatures make for an enjoyable journey, and the trek attracts fewer crowds. It's important to avoid the winter months (December to February) due to heavy snowfall, which can obstruct the high passes and pose risks to trekkers. Planning your expedition during the recommended seasons ensures a safer and more enjoyable experience, with favorable weather, breathtaking scenery, and fewer crowds along the trail.
