The first view of Mount Kailash and the holy lake unfolds after several hours of travel. Approaching this serene and sacred lake, the historic Chiu Monastery comes into view on the northwest shore. From this vantage point, you can catch a glimpse of the majestic Mount Kailash. Manasarovar, the highest freshwater lake with its turquoise complexion, is surrounded by Mount Kailash, Mount Gurula-Mandata, and Lake Rakchyas, creating a heavenly scene. The night is spent at the guesthouse.

Day 05: Drive to Darchen (14975ft) 40km
Following a tranquil time at the shores of the sacred Lake Manasarovar, accompanied by the snowy massif of Gurla Mandhata (7694m) just across the lake, we proceed with a 40-kilometer drive to Darchen, the base for the Mt. Day 06: Trek to Dira-Puk/5000m ( Kailash Kora Start)

The initial stretch is relatively easy, guiding you through the valley at the foot of Mount Kailash, offering clear views of its southern and western slopes. Upon reaching the foot of the western slope, check in at the guesthouse in Dirapuk Monastery. Spend the day exploring the ancient Dirapuk Monastery, also known as Zhire Temple, capturing memorable moments in front of sacred stupas and the grandeur of Mount Kailash's western slope. Weather permitting, witness the breathtaking sunset over Mount Kailash from Dirapuk Monastery, with the sun's afterglow delicately illuminating the steep cliffs as night descends. The night is spent at the guesthouse.

Day 07: Trek Dira Puk-Zuthul Puk, 18km, 6-7 hrs, 550m ascent, 600m descent.
Commence your day early with a 4-kilometer trek from Dirapuk Monastery, ascending to an elevation of 5430 meters. This leg provides a rapid climb, offering a breathtaking sunrise view over the northwest slope of Mount Kailash. Subsequently, embark on another 2-kilometer trek to Dolma La Pass, the highest point at 5630 meters, adorned with prayer flags.

(Note: Due to the high altitude, the path, even in summer, may be icy and scattered with rocks, necessitating caution to prevent slipping.) Upon safely crossing Dolma La Pass, encounter the emerald-green Lake of Compassion (also known as Guri Kund), believed to purify sins with a dip, and witness the thick glaciers on the northwest slope of Mount Kailash.

Following the lake, a gradual descent leads to the valley beneath the southeast foot of Mount Kailash, housing Zutulpuk Monastery (also known as Dzutripuk Monastery). Here, encounter adorable wild animals and find a peaceful resting spot on the grasslands. Overnight stay is arranged at Zutulpuk Monastery Guesthouse.

Day 08: End of Kailash Parikrama ( Kailash Kora finish) and drive to Saga
In the morning, trek back from Zutulpuk Monastery to Darchen, the starting point of the Kailash Trek. Following the completion of the trek, take a 30-kilometer drive to Lake Manasarovar, where you can approach the sacred lake's shores and engage in spiritual activities such as meditation or cleansing rituals with its holy waters, significant for Hindus and Buddhists. Optional hot springs are available for foot baths or soaking to rejuvenate weary pilgrims. Conclude the day with a drive to Saga and an overnight stay at the Hotel in Saga.

Day 09: Drive back to Kerung.
Embark on your morning journey to Kerung, a hidden gem situated on the Tibet-Nepal border. Experience a noticeable shift in scenery as the altitude decreases, transitioning from snow-capped mountains and vast wastelands to lush forests and captivating canyon landscapes along the roadside.

Difficulty Level & Physical Demand During Mt. Kailash Tour

The Mount Kailash tour is considered moderate to challenging due to the high altitude, long driving hours, and demanding trekking conditions during the Kailash Kora (Parikrama).

Although no technical climbing or mountaineering experience is required, participants should be physically prepared for:

  • Walking 6–9 hours at high altitude
  • Trekking over uneven and rocky terrain
  • Cold temperatures and strong winds
  • Limited oxygen levels above 5,000m
  • Basic accommodation and remote travel conditions

The most demanding section is crossing Dolma La Pass (5,630m) during the Kora.

Altitude & Health Information

Highest Altitude

  • Highest sleeping altitude: approximately 5,000m
  • Highest trekking point: Dolma La Pass – 5,630m

At these elevations, oxygen levels are significantly lower than at sea level, making proper acclimatization extremely important.

Altitude Sickness (AMS)
Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is the most common health concern during the tour.

Common Symptoms
Travelers may experience:

  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue
  • Loss of appetite
  • Difficulty sleeping

These symptoms are common at high altitude and should not be ignored.

Serious Warning Signs
Seek immediate medical attention or descend to a lower altitude if you experience:

  • Confusion or disorientation
  • Difficulty walking properly
  • Persistent vomiting
  • Blue lips or fingernails
  • Chest tightness

Health Tips for High Altitude

  • Walk slowly and maintain a steady pace
  • Drink plenty of water
  • Avoid alcohol and smoking
  • Eat light but frequent meals
  • Keep yourself warm at all times
  • Rest properly during acclimatization days

Accommodation Standards During Kailash tour

Accommodation during the trip will vary depending on the location. In major cities and towns, travelers will stay in good tourist-standard hotels (3-star category) with basic modern amenities. However, accommodation in remote areas - especially around Lake Manasarovar, Dirapuk, and Zuthul Puk - is very basic due to the isolated high-altitude environment. In these areas, travelers may need to stay in dormitory-style guesthouses with shared toilets, limited hot water, intermittent electricity and internet access, and simple bedding arrangements.

Travelers should be mentally prepared for limited comfort and basic facilities during the Kailash Kora (Parikrama).

Food During the Tour

Meals are usually simple but filling, suitable for high-altitude travel.
Typical meals include:

  • Rice
  • Noodles
  • Soup

Vegetarian meals are widely available throughout the route.
