Gosaikunda Helambu Trek

Gosaikunda Helambu Trek

The main attraction of Gosaikunda Helambu Trek is holy Gosaikunda Lake which is one of the most popular pilgrimage destinations among both Hindu and Buddhist religious groups of people. Especially during full moon in the month of August, this sacred lake is visited by large number of people. There is also some festive moment when many shamans gather to show their shamanism rituals thus claiming their rights traditionally. According to a legend Lord Shiva had created this holy lake when he pierced a glacier with his trident weapon Trishul to obtain water to slake his thirst after consuming poison. The holy Gosainkunda Lake has a black rock in the middle which it is said to be the head of Lord Shiva and white rocks under the water that is said to be the remnant of an ancient shrine. Around Gosainkunda Lake, there are few other lakes also namely Bhairabkunda, Suryakunda, Sarswotikunda and Nagkunda. These lakes are worth to observe and enjoy the views as well. After visiting this sacred lake, you will be crossing Laurebina Pass (4,610m) and now, the trail will be dropped down towards Helambu valley.

One of the most beautiful valleys, Helambu, offers you to enjoy real cultural hospitality and breathe taking views of Langtang Himalayan region. In the higher elevation, mostly the villages are inhabited by Sherpa and Tamang communities. So, the local traditional culture reflects eventually the similar themes of other regions inhibited by Buddhist society. Particularly, villages like Melamchi Gaon, Tarkeghyang and Sermathang are large settlements of the trek and are worth to explore. Together you will glimpse magnificent views of the towering peaks of entire Himalayan range while passing through lush forests of pine, oak and rhododendron flowers.
